Antique gilded brass Sikes hydrometer with accompanying lab glass and 9 small brass weights in original velvet lined mahogany case. Good condition, velvet is soiled and slide rule no longer present. Hydrometers were used professionally in a few industries including brewing and for such activities as home brewing. A hydrometer was used for measuring specific gravity (how heavy a liquid is compared to water) in alcoholic drinks and other liquids. Later replaced by glass, in the 19th century hydrometers like this were made out of brass.
