Antique 19thC pine military campaign case/trunk with matched, removable jappaned tin metal liner within.

This item was purchased along with other effects belonging to Sir Reginald Arthur Gamble (born 1862) who was educated at Ballol College Oxford University. He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1881 and had a distinguished career at the forefront of the Financial Department. He was an accomplished tennis player who took part in several Wimbledon Championships. He retired in 1918 after the death of his son. He went on to work in China for four years returning to England before he died in 1930.

19thC pine military campaign case/trunk with matched, removable jappaned tin metal liner within. Outer pine case in original black paint with original carry handles to either end and metal protective trims to edges and corners.

Original removable tin metal liner still present (these are frequently missing) with its wire handles and brass lock.

Overall size of pine outer 88cm wide (inc handles in down position), 48cm deep, 48cm tall.

Includes original lettering to outer case along with remains of historical labels. H.N.Bolton, Peshanur, (location of various military activity. The 1857 rising was the biggest threat to Britain’s colonial power during its rule of the Indian subcontinent, leading to the end of East India Company rule and the reorganisation of the army).

Excellent patina, ideal for storage and display, alternatively this could be used as a low coffee table or end of bed storage.
