Dating from 1918, Japanese Hibachi primarily of elm construction.

Designed to hold burning charcoal, the concept of the Hibachi is believed to date back to the Heian period (794 - 1185), originally conceived as a transportable heating and cooking device.

This particular design of Hibachi became popular 1880 - 1920, consisting of an open-topped container with a heatproof copper metal liner designed to hold the burning charcoal and a removable timber frame at the top. Recessed decorative hand grip at each end of the outer cabinet..

The rest of the cabinet is made up of a series of storage drawers to the front with traditional wrought ironwork handle to each drawer. The well fitting storage drawers are full depth, providing generous storage for smaller things.
