Operational name - Hawker Siddeley Hawk (subsequently produced by its successor companies, British Aerospace and BAE Systems). The Hawk was originally conceived as the Hawker P.1182 in the 1960s and 1970s. It has been successfully used in a lead training capacity and as a low-cost combat aircraft. Operators of the Hawk have included the Royal Air Force (notably the Red Arrows display team) and several foreign military operators. The Hawk was produced until 2020 in the UK and also produced under licence in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), with over 1000 Hawks sold to 18 operators around the world.

The highly successful Hawker Siddeley HS. 1182 Hawk Trainer was first flown (XX154) at Dunsfold on 21st August 1974, piloted by the late Duncan Simpson.
During the Second World War, Hawker Siddeley was one of the United Kingdom's most important aviation concerns, producing numerous designs including the famous Hawker Hurricane fighter plane that, along with the Supermarine Spitfire, was Britain's front-line defence in the Battle of Britain. During this campaign, Hurricanes outnumbered all other British fighters combined in service, and were responsible for shooting down 55 per cent of all enemy aircraft destroyed.
