EUGEN MONTELIN painter, designer, sculptor, poet
Eugen Montelin is a singular and extremely interesting artist personality. He achieved his great break-through in 1964 with an exhibition that was discussed all over the world at the Musée Galliera in Paris, invited by the City of Paris no less. In his paintings done directly on boards of pine or spruce fascinating, frequently bizarre shapes and creatures appear from the swirling mists of a world of saga and folk lore. His figures evidence wrath, joy, jealosy, lust, sorrow, happiness, rage, pride, and every other emotion in a world which, mirror-like and stark, reveals us humans. All this has been executed with the intensely suggestive technique that is unique to Montelin, and that no one in the world has yet been able to emulate. The shapes are already there, in the endless variations of the structures and patterns making up the surface of the wood. Montelin is but the mid-wife of the creations of Nature, through him we are rendered capable of seeing.
Montelin is probably the only great contemporary painter who has also designed a complete set of glass-ware. Here, too, Nature has inspired and helped him to create. Wood structures, mainly of. birch, have been transformed into glass with the aid of a technique that Montelin has termed
"glassography". The result is the famous crystal glass set THE ICE FLOWER. Just as the pictures were pioneers in the field of painting this glass set brought something entirely new to the art of glass.
A proof of the point is that it was immediately acquired by the Corning Museum of Glass in New York which must be considered the highest possible artistic recognition of a glass product.
These glasses have the clearness of crystal and the living shape of the tree. They are like ice sculptures, created by Nature herself with the icy coldness of the winter night awakened by the first rays of the rising sun, mirrored, tossed about, and shattered into all the colours of the spectrum by a thousand surfaces.
Each individual glass bears the signature EM and its year of manufacture, and is per se an exquisite : collector's item. It is made by hand in one of those famous Swedish glassworks where quality is paramount.
