This listing is for just one doll, sold separately. Doll Ref D121.
Unique, genuine vintage, hand made and hand decorated artisan piece that originated in the Tõhoku region of Northeast Japan. A wonderful piece of unique folk art featuring the Daruma character.
The creation of Kokeshi dolls spans more than 150 years, originally produced as toys and special family memento’s.
This particular example features Daruma a characterisation of Bodhidharma a legendary Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th or 6th century. He is traditionally credited as the transmitter of Buddhism to China, and regarded as its first Chinese patriarch. According to Chinese legend, he also began the physical training of the monks of Shaolin Monastery that led to the creation of Shaolin kungfu.
Daruma is known as Dámó in China and as Daruma in Japan. Contemporary Daruma design is rich in symbolism and is regarded more as a talisman of good luck to the Japanese. Daruma dolls and Kokeshi dolls are seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck.
This example features a doll with interesting interpretation of Daruma on its body which makes this a rare design unique to one specific artisan, who’s signature can be found on the underside of the base.
