Vintage Royal Doulton ‘Beefeater’ Toby Jug.

The first Toby jugs were made by Ralph Wood I (1715-1772) and his son Ralph Wood II. The name may come from the character Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, the French word tope meaning "to drink hard", or Henry Elwes, an 18th century Yorkshire drinker known as "Toby Fillpot". Since the introduction of these decorative pieces by Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester and Wilkinson they have become collectible throughout Europe.

Toby jugs were made famous by a number of artists and authors who collected them or used them as favoured desk top storage vessels for pens/pencils and brushes.
